The Cross
The story of the cross on the cover of my books

The cross you see on the cover of A Tempered Faith and A Teachable Faith is not simply a computer graphic.

It is as real as the events of September 11, 2001.

An anonymous man used part of a girder from the fallen World Trade Center to fashion a small 8-inch cross for me. This carpenter of steel then delivered the cross to my church and left it there for me. Today, the cross sits in my home -- where my husband Jim once sat beside me.

Recently, I have learned the identity of this man who did not speak to me in words, but instead, spoke profoundly with his hands and the faith in his heart.

Rich DePietro, thank you for the cross you made for me. It is the only memory of Ground Zero that I cherish.

Like my faith, it rose from the ashes of destruction and the crucible of death.

It is hope wrapped in steel.
